April Regional Meeting -- Meadowlands Racetrack. Regional Governor Paul Roberts, ASA Hosted by New Jersey Chapter 73, the third Annual Region 15 Meeting will take place on Thursday, April 22, 2004. Outgoing Regional Governor Paul Roberts, ASA will be the guest of honor at the meeting, which will include a tour of the Meadowlands arena and track, and lectures on harness racing, and on the economic impact of redeveloping (a) the Monticello Raceway and (b) the Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands (Part I). The cost for Part I alone is $25. Or stay for cocktails and dinner (Part II) at the plush Pegasus Restaurant overlooking the New York skyline and enjoy an evening of harness racing with Paul. The cost for Part II is $45. The cost for the complete event (COMBO), including tour, lectures, dinner and racing is $60 (a $10 savings). Reservations with checks must be received by Friday, April 9, 2004, so don't delay. Guests are welcome. This event is sure to be a popular sellout. Schedule of Events at Meadowlands Racetrack
  • 11:30 a.m. -- Meet in Parking Lot 1 at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, 50 State Route 120, East Rutherford, NJ 07073 for tailgate refreshments of coffee, donuts and bagels. Directions and a map are on the Meadowlands website for directions.
  • 12:15 p.m. -- Assemble in the lobby of the Track Clubhouse for an Insider's Tour, a behind the scenes look at Giants Stadium, the Meadowlands Racetrack and the Continental Airlines Arena. Bring a camera.
  • 2:00 p.m. -- Lectures at at Redd's Restaurant & Bar at 317 Washington Ave, Carlstadt, NJ 07072-2805 (Telephone: 201-933-0015). Meet upstairs in the corporate meeting room. Snacks and refreshments throughout meeting.

  • 2:15 p.m. -- A speaker from Empire Resorts, Inc., will talk about the Impact of Gaming Facilities on the Local Economy. Empire, which currently operates the Monticello Raceway, an upstate New York harness track, is planning to redevelop it in cooperation with the Cayuga Nation of NY. The plans include video gaming machines at the track and an adjoining resort and casino.
  • 3:15 p.m. -- Afternoon break with hors d'oeuvres and drinks (cash bar).
  • 4:00 p.m. -- Racing columnist Philip A. Pines, the author of The Complete Book of Harness Racing and former curator of the Harness Museum of Goshen, will talk about the history of harness racing, and the Museum's collection of artwork and racing memorabilia. Mr. Pines, who is a consultant to the New York State Off Track Betting Corporation and to racing artists, is a member of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame.
  • 4:50 p.m. -- A speaker from Mills/Mack-Cali Realty (MMCR), the joint venture that is redeveloping the Continental Airlines Arena site at the Meadowlands will talk about Arena Development -- Economic Impact. MMCR plans to redevelop and expand the Arena as Xanadu, an entertainment, office and hotel complex.

  • 6:00 p.m. -- Assemble in the Pegasus Restaurant for a cocktails (cash bar) and dinner followed by an evening of harness racing.

Blue Diamond.March Meeting -- Gems & Jewelry  The March chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Connolly's Pub & Restaurant. The Analysis and Use of Financial StatementsDr. A.C. (Tony) SondhiAn internationally renowned industry expert on revenue recognition, Dr. Sondhi is the President of A.C. Sondhi & Associates, LLC., a financial advisory services firm with offices in New Jersey and Florida. A coauthor of The Analysis and Use of Financial Statements, Dr. Sondhi is a prolific author and lends expert direction to committees of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR). A popular conference speaker, he has taught at Columbia, Georgetown and New York Universities, and was a Visiting Professor at Stockholm University and the Copenhagen Business School.


January Meeting: Business Valuation.  The January chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. November Meeting -- Real Estate.  The November chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. at Connolly's Pub & Restaurant. The Trust helps preserve our architectural heritage by encouraging voluntary preservation under the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive Program. Long Island Chapter November Meeting: Business Valuation.  The November Chapter Meeting of ASA Chapter 72, Long Island, will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2003 at the Milleridge Inn. The Chapter Meeting at 6:30 p.m. follows the 5:30 p.m. Board Meeting. The guest speakers will be candidate members Edward G. Donnelly, CPA, PC and Stephen A. Linker, CPA, DABFA. They will examine the implications for business valuation appraisers of the much-discussed Case of Gross v. Commissioner. The case, which dealt with the taxation of Sub S corporations and appropriate valuation techniques, originated in the Tax Court in 2001, and wound up in the U.S. Court of Appeals. Mr. Donnelly will also talk about a case where the trail of mysteriously invested cash led to the solution of an unsolved Queens, NY murder. Mr. Linker will talk about an engagement in which he discovered a second set of accounting records after the NYC murder of a restaurant manager. Dinner is $25 for members and guests. Chapter 30's Fran Zeman on NBC's Today Show  Fran Zeman, ASA, an active member of NYC Chapter 30, and chair of the ASA Personal Property Committee,  As seen on TVRegional Governor Paul Roberts and Fran Zeman, ASA.is scheduled to be interviewed on NBC's Today show on Friday, August 22, 2003. The nationally-syndicated Today show, co-anchored by Katie Couric and Matt Lauer, airs weekdays from 7:00-10:00 a.m. in New York. Ms. Zeman, seen at right in a recent media training session with Regional Governor, Paul Roberts, ASA, will discuss ways to obtain the most accurate appraisal available in the marketplace. Ms. Zeman, who has an MA in Art History from Brooklyn College, is a widely respected Personal Property Appraiser specializing in Antiques & Decorative Arts, Fine Arts, Oriental Rugs, and General Residential Contents. ASA International Conference. The annual ASA International Conference convenes in Tampa, Florida this year from July 14, 2003 through July 16. Keynote speaker, Z. Christopher Mercer, ASA, will focus on Sarbanes-Oxley: What It Means to Appraisers. Read all about it.

The second Annual Regional Joint Meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and will include a trip to the Statue of Liberty, a tour of Ellis Island and dinner at the Mercantile Grill. The speaker will be The Honorable Charles A. Gargano, Chairman and CEO of the Empire State Development Corporation.

Ellis IslandThe tour group will meet at noon at Battery Park/South Ferry. Our Circle Line Ferry (telephone: 212-269-5755) will leave at 1:00 p.m. for the Statue of Liberty (the monument itself is still closed to visitors), and continue to Ellis Island (seen at left), where we'll take a professionally guided tour. After the tour, we'll adjourn to the Mercantile Grill (telephone: 212-482-1221) at 126 Pearl Street, a short walk from the ferry terminal.

Charles GarganoThe dinner meeting, beginning at 6:00 p.m., will feature a two-hour open bar and buffet dinner. Mr. Gargano, who is also Vice-Chairman of the the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will address some of the economic and development issues facing New York in his talk, The Next Renaissance. His insights on the Ground Zero reconstruction are sure to be interesting.

March Meeting: Art Glass.  This meeting will held on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at the Hilton Huntington Hotel jointly with Long Island Chapter 72. West Point Museum

Region-wide meeting and West Point Tour. The Hudson Valley ASA chapter has put together a joint meeting (Hudson Valley, New York City, Long Island, Northern New Jersey, Connecticut and Western New York chapters) and West point tour for Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Alan C. Aimone, chief of Special Collections at the United States Military Academy, West Point and a member of the Hudson Valley Chapter, will lead a tour (rain or shine) of the academy's military museum. Mr. Aimone is the author, with his wife Barbara, of A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War.

The artist, Paul Gould who is well known for his landscape paintings of the Hudson Valley and his expertise Mute Swans over Bear Moutain Bridge by John Gould in painting restoration, will talk about Hudson Valley Painting. Paul is the son of John Gould, a noted artist in the Hudson Valley tradition whose watercolor Mute Swans Over Bear Mountain Bridge is seen at left.

Annual ASA NYC Holiday Party.  Save the date. Regional Ad Valorem Seminar: Part III of Contemporary Valuation Issues As They Relate to Ad Valorem Taxation.  The full-day seminar will take place on Monday, December 3 at the Meadowlands Sheraton, East Rutherford, NJ.
